There are words that cannot be taken back. The world of A Bouquet of Czech Folktales is a model of a world that is cruel, yet just. In his collection, Karel Jaromír Erben brought a message from times when people commonly lived alongside demons, and when the dead would occasionally rise from their graves. Every deed has its consequence, and every violation of a taboo triggers an inexorable mechanism of justice. A word is an act: it can summon love as well as destruction; a prayer can save, and a curse cannot be undone. In five ballads, five violations of the natural order take place. Through a combination of diverse puppetry techniques, the wheels of this world are set in motion once again.
