The plays Jabka (Apples) and Maryša Vávrová were created "on commission" for the first edition of the Prague showcase The Emperor’s New Clothes, dedicated in January 2025 to the memory of Professor Jan Císař, a theatre scholar and native of Hradec Králové, whose theoretical,
pedagogical and advisory work has profoundly influenced generations of theatre-makers, both
professional and amateur. The organisers requested either Maryša (the professor’s favourite play), or
any play featuring lots of apples (a nod to the theoretical problem Professor Císař once posed about
the overuse of apples as a stage symbol).
This resulted in two modest productions by two East Bohemian puppeteers, serving as an
unpretentious tribute to an unpretentious legend of Czech theatre:
Jabka (Apples) – At our house, everyone cored apples. Grandma cored apples, Mum cored
apples, Dad cored apples, and I cored apples too… Nothing went to waste in our house.
A tabletop theatre performance scented with apples and memories.
Maryša Vávrová is an attempt to combine both assignments by an author who speaks neither the
Haná nor the Slovácko dialect; so he will speak in his own way. This is both an opening apology to
the Mrštík brothers and an explanation for all those who love the classic play Maryša.
