From the night she laid the bricks and mortar, the mother knew the shadows had crept inside her too. She no longer heard them just behind the curtains or the doors, but deep within her own chest. When she placed her ear to my belly, she heard them inside me as well. She knew they would grow within us, take root in our insides, and that we would never be able to tear them out.
In her novel Woodworm, Layla Martínez reveals, in a fascinating way, how hatred grows within a person. From the depths of a worm-eaten house, two female voices resound, longing to break the cycle of poverty, violence, and exploitation.
After the end of the performance, we invite you to join us for Kitchen Table: Woodworm – a discussion of secondary school students from Hradec Králové on the performance you have just seen.
