Plzeň is inextricably linked to the tumultuous youth of the renowned Czech composer (and former high school repeater) Bedřich Smetana—the cousin of Josef František Smetana, a significant Plzeň figure in political, cultural, and scientific life, as well as in the Czech National Revival in Plzeň.
In Plzeň, Bedřich Smetana not only tried to complete his secondary education but also became a sought-after pianist, dancer, and socialite, gracing numerous parties with his presence. In fact, Plzeň occupies a considerable space in his diaries.
For this reason, in the Year of Czech Music, Plzeň’s ALFA Theatre has prepared a project that explores the life and work of this distinguished Czech composer. There is no doubt that Smetana was the founder of modern Czech music, a leading representative of national culture, and a major influence on subsequent generations of Czech composers.
